The Meriam Webster Dictionary defines a miracle as "An extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment." Today a miracle occurred. There was a 2nd snow day in the year 2010 for New York City public schools.
In my 13 years of public schooling in New York City, I experienced one snow day.
These kids don't know how lucky they have it. Two snow days in one New York City public school year is unheard of.
That day in 1996 will be ingrained in my memory forever. We went sledding in Riverside Park on the lids of trash cans. We were so filled with surprise and joy (because we'd never had a snow day in our entire lives) that we hardly knew what to do with ourselves.
It's sort of like never having the chance to celebrate your birthday for 16 years, and then suddenly someone throws you a surprise party.
Ari seemed to enjoy the snow day news as well!
Woohoo! Snow days are awesome! And yes, as I child in the NYC Public school system I found myself sending heat seeking missile bad thoughts towards the effectiveness of the NYC Sanitation Department. I remember the Blizzard of '96 fondly too...the only snow day in my public school history.
ReplyDeleteBlizzard of 1996 represent! I also sent mental lazer rays toward the New York City Sanitation Department!
ReplyDeleteAt least you got one snow day! There will never, EVER, be snow days in Phoenix!! Haha.
ReplyDeleteHA HA HA! This is true! We should be grateful for what we got. Although, upstate New York gets far more snow days then we do!
ReplyDeleteFunny and nostalgic pictures are great to really enjoy TWO SNOW DAYS IN THE NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. Who would have thought it!! Now I believe anything can happen.
ReplyDeleteIt's true. This miracle really makes one think that anything is possible!
ReplyDeletei think that that it shoud be requirement that there is a schhol snow day each year. Just for the fun of it.
ReplyDeletei was six years old when the blizzard of 1996 hit.The entire city practically shut down. There was no bus service. The schools were closed.Banks were closed. Our country's great United States Postal Service couldnt get us our mail.I honestly wish we got another storm like that one.Maybe Duane Reade will give me a snow day as well
ReplyDeleteI remember one lone bus on 86th street in 1996 on that fateful day. The poor bus was struggling to get by, but had no chance. It was the only vehicle on the road.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, on a random note, "Hot and Crusty" bakery was open for some fabulous hot chocolate.
That is so funny. I grew up in California and we never had a snow day...lol But one day they did bring in snow for us. That is as close as they will probably ever get!
ReplyDeleteMy uncle grew up in NYC too :)
Kids today don't know how lucky they are! I definitely remember having a snow day in NYC when I was a kid. I think it was shortly after snow was invented.
ReplyDeleteThey really don't know how lucky they are. I tell you! I believe your right! Snow was invented (circa 1996) and then NYC DOE was so surprised and scared by the white stuff, that they closed the schools to try to figure out what it was!
ReplyDeleteLOL
