Going Berserk Instead of Going to Sleep

In my almost two years as a parent, I have NEVER seen anything like what I just witnessed. I tried to put my son to bed, and he went completely insane. He kicked me in the mouth (my lip is now swollen), hit me in the face and his limbs were flailing everywhere so much so that I had to move out of the way to prevent further injury to myself.

Wil is at work on the night shift and I am here with my son alone. I am really confused by the fact that someone so cute could go that berserk.

He was freaking out because he didn't want to go to bed. And (unfortunately I am so ashamed to admit) he has become completely addicted to the TV show Yo Gabba Gabba, and insists on watching thousands of episodes of it before he passes out from exhaustion on the couch on some part of my body.

What happened to my child who was virtually unaware of the television?

Anyway, I tried to put him in his bed about six times and he busted out of his room. So I tried to lay down with him in my bed and he just screamed and injured me some more. Motherhood is glamorous isn't it?

So folks, what do I do?
--How do I wean him off the crack that is television (which, by the way, I blame Wil for hooking him on)?
--How do I get this child to sleep at night, which he has stopped doing?
Please help!

  1. I gotta admit, I have no idea how to make your child play it cool. Probably because I was a lunatic kid. I took once kicked someone in the mouth and it was babysitter. She tried tickling me and I was very ticklish and had no control over my reaction and then boom. Kick in the face. The gangly limbs of kids man, I tell you, they be dangerous!

  2. Yeah, I hear you. But I gotta say (in your defense) being tickled is awful when you tell the person to stop and they don't. As a child I think it's worse because you're more sensitive. That babysitter deserved what she got! BOOM! Kick in the face!

  3. I want to start off by saying that it is not my fault our son likes tv so much. I don't like it when he watches tv but, atleast he watches good shows and not junk. He still gets books to read so it's not that bad. But I agree with you no tv.

  4. That's true! He doesn't watch garbage, and we worked hard to make sure that what he does watch is educational (Blue's Clues and Yo Gabba Gabba. But I think what happened is that TV somehow became his comfort. And that needs to stop immediately. TV strike!

  5. it's not really a "fault" thing i would think, but it's the parents' responsiblity for what their kids do (especially when they are really little). whether it's watch tv, read a book, play outside, whatever.

  6. Yes yes, you are right, Leigh. The voice of reason :). I was just exasperated. But we must, as parents, take control of the situation (as you said) and make sure the boob tube is limited and potentially not there at all. Thank you for being so sound of mind, Ms Leigh.

  7. You could go immigrant old school... starting when I was around two years old well through teen years, if I acted up, I got slapped. Plain and simple. The childhood asswhooping provided courtesy of mom or dad is a proven results provider.

  8. Ahhh the good old fashioned asswhooping. I just don't think I could bring myself to do that. But I gotta say, I do know a lot of folks that were raised that way! I mean, you turned out alright!

  9. I have to agree that Zahir turned out alright. Maybe his parents did lots of other things that contributed to his fine qualities. About the kicking and crying at bedtime, I have to say I witnessed it and it was tough. I am not sure what to do either but I think exercise before bedtime to wear him out might reduce the strength of his kick and make him tired. No fun. Maybe he will grow out of it. He has successfully beaten other things like teething, crawling, walking, talking. Still working on eating I guess. Good luck Sar.
