What to Wear Baby Boy: Overalls!

I've previously talked about my dislike for the baby boy wardrobe options in my post What Not to Wear Baby Boy. Essentially, baby and toddler boys have limited clothing choices, and they mostly consist of shirts and pants with fictitious sports teams on them. Toddlers are obviously not ready to play for the NBA, so these clothes are irritating and inappropriate.

In What Not To Wear Baby Boy, I also mentioned my friend Josina, who has taken baby boy clothing matters into her own hands. She designed and sewed a pair of adorable overalls for her son (and Ari's great friend) Nelson. Without further ado, here is Nelson modeling his fabulous one of a kind mom-made overalls:

Overalls are a great item of clothing. They can be worn by both girls and boys and can vary in design. Nelson here is modeling a cow print pattern, but your child may prefer trucks, monkeys or maybe stars or hearts.

I might just bug Josina for her overall pattern so I can make Ari some!

  1. Boys clothes really are horrifying. My favorite two items for T are a shit with a retro daiper pin on it and a pair of super soft jeans that he's about to wear right through. Down with NBA, CANUCKS, TRAINS,DISNEY CHARACTERS.... YUK. Talk about FREE advertising.

    That little suit is adorable!

I do have a plan to buy some plain shirts (if the exist) and embroider subversive statements on them.

  2. I actually think girl clothes are even worse - in the sense that many of them are upsettingly "sexy" (who makes cherry print string bikini's in toddler size? Who? WHY?).

Hence my future plan to dress my future child in nothing but overalls, regardless of gender, for the first 3-5 years of their life.
Maybe I can hire Josina to make me some!

  3. They totally sell those like CRAZY here in Portland. There's a market every Saturday on the river with crafts and local artsy stuff and one lady sells these, and what's more awesome is that they're reversible (two prints in one, sweet!)

I should blog about girls clothing choices. Just today I put Tahira in this pink shirt with ruffles on the bottom and ballet print pants and it makes me sick. I dunno, I just really hate all the frilly-frally crap. You're so right about the fake sports teams though! What's up with that? I guess it's better than everything saying "princess" and "cute".

  4. PS: Mint, I totally love the cherry print bikinis for babies. OOPS! Not practical though. UV exposure, much? I just bought T a rashguard that's white with red threading that says, "little surfer" on it. It's a boys top, whatever!

  5. For a minute there, I thought this said "What Not To Wear Baby Boy: Overalls" and then I got all sad because I LOVE to dress Nolan in overalls! He has an adorable plaid green, brown and cream pair from Oosh Koosh - they're short overalls! I love them so much haha!!!

If I knew how to sew, I'd tell you to grab me the pattern too. But, alas...I don't.

  6. This is true, ladies, both boy and girl baby clothing is highly gender stereotypical.

Jess- I wish I knew how to sew!!

  7. Amanda - 2 pieces are uber-practical (remember taking off those wet bathing suits to go to the bathroom? Or not quite making it?

But I prefer the tank-shirt style - or at least the sports-bra style tops - the triangle string bikinis = yes sun exposure and also they look sexualized and ride up constantly because toddlers don't have anything to hold it in place!
