My Birthday, Lucky 31 Approaches

Every year, in October, I get anxious. Because I know that come October 17th, I will be another year older. It's not the aging that frightens me, it's the fact that it is my birthday.

Birthdays in my family are a big deal. As a child, they were built up to being on the same level as a national holiday. Therefore, I expected that everybody that was important to me would make the same fuss about my birthday as my family did.

So, last year, when there wasn't a carnival or blimp flying outside my apartment that said:
"HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY SARAH FADER!"

I became very sad. I believe that on my actual 30th birthday last year, Wil was working.

Each year, he insists that he is going to do something "really cool" for my birthday, and then we end up just hanging around the house, not doing anything particularly exciting.

Mint and I went to see "Where The Wild Things Are" with Ari, which was fun but Wil and I didn't get to do anything, because he was working, and that was disappointing.

This year, I've informed him, that I want him to do something for my birthday. Look, I don't want a pony, a trip to Disney Land or Las Vegas, but I do want to acknowledge that I am celebrating another year of life. And, of course, I want a cake. Chocolate. Is there really any other flavor? Come on.

For his birthday, I took him camping, so I deserve to have something special done for my birthday. I've decided. I don't care if 31 is a random number, I've lived another year and that is worth celebrating.

  1. With every post I find more and more that we have in common. I feel the same way about my birthday. The countdown begins the day after my birthday. I look forward to that one day a year where it is all about me. Since Grace was born it has been bypassed almost every year. I justify no celebration or no presents with the fact that all our "extra" money goes towards things Grace needs, but dammit I want something too!
I hope your birthday comes with a big bang and a great celebration!

  3. Ha - that's cute. I HATE birthdays and would prefer they just all go away. Now I try to go out to a restaurant I like and have a nice desert. Dat's it!

  4. I've never cared about doing anything on my birthday. I mean, it's nice to go to dinner or something low-key, but I haven't had a party, cake, or decorations since I was 16. Perhaps it's because we never did much growing up. Usually my mom let us pick what we were having for dinner (she always cooked it, we never went out) and we got to eat it on a special plate.

Anyway, I really hope you have a great birthday! You'll have to let us know what you end up doing. Yasir's is October 15th and my brothers is the 13th :)

  5. Hey, I just turned 31 in August! I feel the same way about my birthdays. It doesn't have to be a big deal, but I just want to do SOMETHING a little different than ordinary. I hope you get to do something enjoyable and at least a little bit special on your birthday.

  6. Mental Mom- So glad you feel me on this one. When you have kids, all your energy goes into doing things for them, planning special events for them. But our birthdays deserve celebrating! Without us, the kids wouldn't exist.

Harriet - Yum! That sounds like a great birthday plan. See, that would be fine with me. I just want something to acknowledge it.

Amanda - This is a category in which I am high maintenance. Like I said, it doesn't have to be extravagant, but I would like a celebration of sorts.

Amanda from Canada - Happy belated birthday! And happy 31! Yrs, I agree. Something fun must be done!
