HuffPost Live Interview - Three-Year-Olds are Assholes

I had the pleasure of being on HuffPost Live today. I had a blast, but next time I'm doing my hair before I go on TV.

Enjoy!

  1. My daughter told me this morning that she was going to "poop on my head" because I wouldn't let her go to daycare in the dirty pj's that she'd been wearing for about 72 hours straight. So thank you for this because, damn, it is so true.

  3. What an utterly charming use of the word "assholes" (sarcastic comment) duh
I'm horrified. You are talking about small children for heaven's sake. One thing I can assure you is that all children learn by watching. You are modeling the behavior for them, so take your vitamins and watch it unfold. Little assholes grow into bigger ones. There is no time frame on that. No 12 month window that opens and closes. My advice: learn how to be a good parent. Keep learning, it's challenging. Teach them.
I'm an early childhood educator and work with many parents. Be thankful you seem to have "normal" and "healthy" children. Teach them how to be appropriate and make good choices. I get it that you're being witty, but it's kinda offensive to hear you talk about your own children like that. Just sayin.

  5. If people find your use of the term "assholes" offensive, just swap that word with 'Republicans.' Your post is equally accurate when you make that substitution.

  9. Try this:

Here is a simple way to deal with these situations. Instead of 'telling' a child, give them a 'choice'. Example: Instead of saying "put on your pajamas", ask "are you going to wear the blue pjs or the brown ones?" The child will pick one and do it promptly because he feels he is making the decision for himself. "Are you going to hold the left side of the stroller or the right side?" "Are you going to put away the blocks first or the books?" You get it, don't you!

  10. well, i have a totally different perspective. i've raised three girls, two finished college, one finished grad school, one's still in grad school, the last one is in high school. i had all the same problems you people seem to whine about but for some reason i was always able to see my kids as people and love them enough to not get upset at their behavior which was sometimes...um....CHILDISH. because they were CHILDREN. i'm going to play the old fart card and say that a lot of younger parents really seem to be struggling when it comes to raising kids. probably because your own parents had their heads in the butts. your parents are my co-workers and most of them don't seem to have much of a work ethic, knowledge of general day-to-day social protocol, etc. so take my challenge. next time your kid is 'out of control' go look in the mirror and then deal with the problem.
and for the record, i never hit or punished my kids. never had to.

  11. Great piece and Interview. For the record, I don't believe there is any gender difference when it comes to how we think of our uncontrollable toddlers. We have a 2 year old and my wife and I agree that he is the most precious, delicious gift in the world....except when he's a d*#chebag. Nice that we have something to look forward to...the 3's. Ugg.
