Sleep Woes at 20 Months

My son has decided that he does not like to sleep anymore. I don't know whether it's because he thinks he is missing something important that only occurs when his body is in a resting state or what the issue is, but the bottom line is that he refuses to sleep. Even naps have become an issue.

I've ended up taking him into my bed with me when all else fails. I turn out the light and he curls up with me and falls asleep. However, I don' t get restful sleep when he is in the bed with me because he is a total bed hog. I wake up in the middle of the night to find him sprawled out in random directions, or positioned so that I am almost falling off the edge of the bed.

In a desperate attempt to solve the problem, I decided to reason with him. I asked why he doesn't want to go to sleep at night. Here's what he had to say:

And finally, he revealed his real reason for not wanting to sleep in the crib:

Clearly I need some help. If you have sleeping suggestions for toddlers, please post them as a comment or email me at oldschoolnewschoolmom@gmail.com.

  2. He naps for an hour. I had a routine going before bedtime bath, story etc. Now he wants none of it.

And plus I was working for two weeks straight and I think he missed me.

  3. Yea Zalah usually sleeps for two but she had/is having that phase too. The only thing that worked for us is to stop picking her up and let her scream. At this age, she was smart enough to know she was getting our attention, and not to go on when it didn't work any more! Good luck!

PS we separated them again. Night One was OK, but its better if they still alone for now, to both learn to sleep through the night!

  4. The sleep thing is just a never ending process.

I think you're right. Trust your instincts. If they sleep better alone, then go for it!

  5. I enjoyed your interview with Ari concerning his sleep habits. He is quite a multitasker, able to put cards in boxes while answering tough questions. Here is hoping this too will pass. What about taking him for a ride around town and when he falls asleep, bring him home and make the transfer. Sounds like a lot of work. Maybe it would work in the cozy coupe? No, huh.

  6. I forgot who told me this, but they used to strap their daughter into the carseat, when she was a baby/toddler and just drive around till she was asleep and then come home! So that does work, but is seems like a ton of effort to do on a daily basis.

  7. yeah.. it happens here too, sometimes its because hes learned something new and wants to pratice LOL

it stops after a while though. I am very big on routine and stuff though, even if he doesn't like it still happens and he'll go into bed. if he cries I don't take him out, I just go in every 10 minutes or so and hes tired so eventually falls asleep. if hes clearly wide awake I take him out and read him books with low lighting, cuddle in my bed etc then try again in 30 minutes.
