Cocoa Victory!

I previously mentioned my son's aversion to drinking milk. I've tried many creative techniques to combat this challenging behavior including strawberry milk and the commercial chocolate powder that I grew up with. See previous posts here and here. These solutions were short-lived.

Today, I discovered another alternative: organic cocoa powder! My dad was drinking hot cocoa and I asked him if I could have some. He said "I want to warn you, it's a little spicy." Fair enough. I tried it, I liked it, so I decided to test it out on my son.

I warmed organic whole milk in the microwave for 30 seconds and mixed in a bit of this magical fair trade powder. I placed the cup of cocoa on the floor so my son could discover it on his own. Low and behold it worked! He loved it.

My dad generously donated the rest of the container for toddler use! YAY!

  1. Good stuff but it does it still have caffeine in it (chocolate)?
You say it doesn't make him insane so I guess if it does it is minimal?

  4. I love that stuff!
You can also make your own hot cocoa mix, one that has less sugar. I use equal parts cocoa and sugar. For me, a mug of hot chocolate is a tablespoon of cocoa and one of sugar with about 1.5 cups of milk.

  5. I make my own hot choc too with organic sugar/splenda and regular coca mixed with hot milk.

I actually foam up the milk too, but you don't have to. I use something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001RT2C4/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=471057153&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000BZ6BXE&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0ER9MPPZ3ZJER9KV0PJW

my son likes the foam bits on the top.
